James was born in early summer 1860 in Prescot, Lancashire. In 1871 was a scholar and lived with his mother and father at 1 Moss Court in Prescot. His father, John, was a watchmaker. In the next decade John trained to become a plumber. His mother Mary moved to St. Helens following the death of her husband in 1876. The relocation suited John was greater demand for his skills. The family moved to 65 Hope Street, St. Helens and James developed his plumbing trade.

His debut for the Club came against Aspull on the 2nd of December, 1882. James was in the pack of forwards that day and the Saints prevailed over the Liverpool outfit. He had the pleasure of the match also being the debut of his brother, John. That was the start of a long career for James and he is recorded on 146 team sheets over the next eight years. In reality this number would probably be in excess of 150 as there does not exist a complete record of all matches. He was a talented footballer and we believe he played in the forwards for West Lancs and Border Towns Union against the South East Lancashire team at Wigan. His final recorded match was on the 7th of November 1891 as part of a Saints team who lost to top side Aspull at home. His brother John also played for the Saints and also traded as a plumber.

James married Agnes McKehnie in April 1884. They went on to have five children. By 1891 had moved to number 34 Hope Street, St Helens where he lived with his wife Agnes.

Ten years later they relocated to live in Beech Road, Huyton. Sadly his wife, Agnes died in 1904 aged just 42. James, like his brother and fellow plumber John, died at a young age. He was only 45 when he passed away in January 1906.
