MATCH REPORT : St. Helens v Widnes 1 January 1883 A team of players from each of the above towns met on New Year’s Day, on Littler’s Field, Dentons Green. The St. Helens skipper put his foot to the ‘oval’ at three o’clock, by quick following up, a return was prevented, a scrimmage ensuing. Connolly getting hold made a good run, Gregson replying with a long kick. The play for a time was neutral, but after a fine dribble by the “Saints” a dead ball was registered. Foreman returned the drop out, and after some give and take play Finney handled the leather, and a after a quick run passed to Cunliffe, who failed to proceed further. The “Chemicals” by good passing, now took the play near the “Saints’’ citadel. The Saints now worked hard and a rush took the oval over the visitors’ line, the result however was only a minor point. Shortly after, J.H. Smith for Widnes ran in, Morris kicking a fine goal. From a line out Lyon broke away along touch to the ‘visitors’ 25. The visitors broke away with a dribble and registered a touch down, soon after scoring another. The result on the call of “no side” being St Helens, one goal, one try, and five minor points, to Widnes one one goal and six minor points, the home team being declared the victors. Although the weather was unfavourable, the game was witnessed by a good number of spectators. |
