MATCH REPORT : ST. HELENS V BATLEY 8 SEPTEMBER 1888 I rather fancy that some of the Batley men were disappointed that the match was over, they appeared like staying for ever. The winners played a game that fairly astonished the St. Helens people, who had never seen such fine passing tactics, and the home players got a lesson that will do them some good. Elliker was the best man on the field, but all the Batley backs played well and their forwards were ably led by Albert Parker, whose efforts were best second dad by Else, Nicholson and Bedford. The St. Helens Club have a good full back in Joe Allen, and the three-quarters would have done better had the halves passed the ball quicker to them. It came along so slowly that the Batley men were on top of their opponents before the ir opponents could stir. St. Helens have a fine forward team and I was very well pleased with the play of Alec Borthwick, Richard Ellison and Daniel McLaughlin, although none of the scrimmagers did badly or shirked their work. The players and spectators took the beating well, and Batley were pleased with their first experience of St. Helens. The St. Helens men have only to stick together and learn one another’s play to become a really first-class team. Score- Batley 4 goals, 1 try and 2 minors to St. Helens 1 try and 3 minors |
