MATCH REPORT : WAVERTREE V ST. HELENS 6 MARCH 1885 THE WEST LANCASHIRE AND BORDER TOWNS RUGBY UNION CHALLENGE CUP FIRST ROUND The forwards on both sides played a good game. Captain Harry Varley kicked off for the visitors who were playing up hill. Varley soon kicked long and forces Scott of Wavertree to touch down, the Saints drawing first blood. The crowd ere excited as the game drew to a close. St. Helens pressed home their advantage and gained another minor point. St. Helens had slightly the best of play as the match ended in a draw with St. Helens gaining 5 minor points to Wavertree 3 minor points, necessitating a replay at St. Helens. |
