MATCH REPORT : ST. HELENS V ASHTON UNDER LYNE 24 SEPTEMBER 1887 St. Helens had whipped up a strong team whilst Ashton might have been materially strengthened. From the commencement of the game to the finish, Ashton-under-Lyyne had not a look in, and were completely penned on their own goal line. The play of the St. Helens backs was particularly fine, their passing being really first class. The play of the Saints’ forwards was also too good for their opponents. Richard Leatherbarrow, William Holt, Ralph Johnson, James Basnett and Alec Borthwick being particularly prominent. In the back division each one shone out brilliantly with Joseph Halton gaining three tries and Ted Foremen attaining a brace. William Haselden also scored a try. The new man, Edward ‘Salt” Eastham was prominent in scoring a try and dropped a splendid goal. Score: - St. Helens 6 goals and 4 tries to Ashton-under-Lyne nil. |
