MATCH REPORT : ST. HELENS V WALKDEN 22 SEPTEMBER 1888

There were at least 2000 spectators lined the enclosure to witness the contest. The game was stubbornly contested throughout. In the first quarter the opponents pressed somewhat, but the defence of the Saints was too good, At the call of half time the score stood at two minors each.

The second half was productive of better playing which the home team were seen to better advantage, their passing being very good, their passing being very good almost producing tries for Billy Lund and Tom Sudlow. Christopher Howard for the Saints narrowly missed a drop at goal.
For St. Helens Joe Allen at full back was conspicuous with his brilliant play. Whilst Tom Sudlow, Billy Lund, Billy Cross and Christopher Howard, in their respective positions, were very good.John Hartman, Richard Ellison and Richard Colquitt were the pick of a good lot of forwards. For the visitors Price, Grundy, Martin Ashcroft and Hurst played a grand game.

After a hard fought game, the match ended in a draw. Score: - St. Helens 4 minors to Walkden 3 minors.
