MATCH REPORT : ST HELENS V LEIGH 28 APRIL 1888

This was the only meeting between these two Clubs in the season, and as Leigh have had such a successful time of it, a great amount of interest was shown in the encounter. Between 3000 and 4000 spectators lined the enclosure of the St. Helens ground, and were rewarded by a a fast and a well contested game from start to finish. In consequence of the strong wind prevailing the game was divided into a game of four quarters.

Leigh won the toss and played with the wind and sun in their favour, but the defence of St. Helens was so strong that the visitors could not score.

On change of ends St. Helens at once assumed the aggressive, and Alec Borthwick, the St. Helens captain scored a try, which was not improved upon.

In the third quarter of the match, Thomas Baines, the St. Helens full back, lost the ball and gifted an easy try to Leigh back Jack Hurst. With the elements inter favour Leigh collected another try by Roberts.

During the last portion of the match with the wind in their favour, St. Helens had by far the best of it. Joseph Halton got a splendid try, from which Haselden kicked a goal. Furthermore, Alec Borthwick and Ted Foreman were within an ace of dropping goals for the Saints.

The game ended in victory for St. Helens by one goal, one try and nine minors to Leigh’s two tries and four minors. The St. Helens forwards played a grand game with Richard Colquitt, Ralph Twist, Daniel McLaughlin, John Hardman and Ralph Johnson being the most prominent. For Leigh Roberts, Hurst, Smith and Lawson were the best.
