MATCH REPORT : ST HELENS V MILLOM 21 SEPTEMBER 1889 The Cumberland Cup holders paid a visit to Denton’s green last Saturday to see if they could defeat S.Helens, they didn’t. The match was not begun till late in the day. The first thing the ball thought of doing after the kick off was to go in touch at centre. George Summers attempt to sprint was frustrated by J.Moore of Millom. Billy Cross and Alec Borthwick then transferred the war, but Cross stopped them reporting progress. Tom Sudlow in trying to take a pass overshot the mark and the ball went into touch. A pass from Dove was negotiated by J. Moore and Tommy Foulkes was forced to concede a minor. Tom Sudlow made unavailing attempt to squeeze through the opposition but Millom turned the screw. Millom started performing at full steam but the Saints prevented scoring by good defence. At the change of ends Millom led by three minors to nil. The lemons were rendered a trifle too succulent by the arrival of the rain, and anything like an exhibition was thrown into the dust bin of the impossible. Both reams suffered near misses close to the goal line but the sound defences prevailed. At the conclusion of events no further points had been scored and the match was declared a draw. ,br> Score: - Millom 3 minors to St Helens nil |
