MATCH REPORT : AUDENSHAW V ST. HELENS 12 JANUARY 1889 Both Clubs were strongly represented for the return fixture at Audenshaw. The ground at Audenshaw was in a very slippery state and the high prevailing wind made accurate football most difficult. The Audenshaw captain won the toss and , of course, elected to play with the wind in his favour. For a time the home team had the upper hand, scoring two minors in quick succession as a result of long kicks. The Saints then started to play well and carried the oval into the Audenshaw territory. After a splendid exhibition of passing by James Graham, Billy Cross and Ted Forman, George Summers crossed for airy behind the posts. Joe Allen kicked a beautiful goal. After the change of ends, it became very apparent that the Saints meant business, as every man played up with determination and a warm time was in store for Audensghaw. Tries followed in quick succession with Billy Cross scoring two and James Graham and Daniel McLaughlin also getting over the line. Two of these tries were augmented by two splendid goals from the boot of James’ Pasha’ Graham. The game became distinctly one-sided in nature and the moderate number of spectators were treated to a fine display of passing from St. Helens. Score: - St. Helens 3 goals, 2 tries and 5 minors to Audenshaw 3 minors. |
