MATCH REPORT : ST. HELENS V TYLDESLEY 26 NOVEMBER 1887 The Saints were missing Tom Finney, Richard Leatherbarrow, Charles Anders and Ted Foreman from their team. In the first half the ball was constantly in the visitor’s territory. Tyldesley being compelled to act on the defensive. After about ten minutes Ralph Twist of St. Helens obtained a good try and William Haselden improved the goal. Shortly afterwards, Mercer of Tyldesley, smartly picking up, got o ver the line. No goal resulted. On the change of ends the visitors had the wind in their favour and it was thought by many that Tyldesley would be the side to equalise but St. Helens played up with such determination that the visitors in this half hardly had a look in only registering two minors to their score. Alec Borthwick gained another try for the Saints and two further minors were accumulated. For St. Helens Joseph Hatton, ‘Salt’ Eastham and Fred Liptrot were the most conspicuous at the car, whilst all the forwards played excellently. For Tyldesley Shaw, the brothers Fearnley and Morris were the best. Score: - St. Helens 1 goal, 1 try and 9 minors to Tyldesley 1 try and 2 minors |
