MATCH REPORT : ST. HELENS V WIDNES 8 APRIL 1887 The match was played on Good Friday before a crowd of about 3000 spectators. The game was of the pleasantest nature throughout. In the first half St. helens were decidedly the better team and succeeded in scoring two tries and five minors to Widnes one minor. James Basnett and Tom Finney responsible for the two tries. Neither try was improved. In the second half, the visitors played much better, and scored a try, principally from the splendid play of Smith, which enabled Plumpton to get a try. The game ended in a well-deserved victory for St. Helens who were determined to end the season on a high note. Score: - St. Helens 2 tries and seven minors to Widnes 1 try and three minors. |
