MATCH REPORT : MORECAMBE V ST. HELENS 15 OCTOBER 1877

The game was played in splendid weather. Both teams were fairly represented although Ted Foreman and William Holt were missing from the Saints team and the home team captain was not well enough to play. The game was of a very fast description. The Morecambe team, if anything, had an advantage in the forwards, but in the backs the Morecambe side were completely outclassed. The St. Helens backs Joseph Halton, Edward Eastham and William Haselden kicking and running in splendid style. This play left to Tom Finney gaining a try which was improved by Charles Anders from a very difficult position.

In the second half William Haselden got a try after a splendid run which Charles Anders failed to improve. At “no side” the score was - St. Helens 1 goal, 1 try and 5 minors to Morecambe 3 minors. For the Saints, Joseph Halton played a grand game at full back, whilst Charles Anders, Edward Eastham, Tom Finney, William Haselden and Charles Anders in the back division, and Richard Leatherbarrow, Ralph Johnson, Ralph Twist and Jack Dearden were conspicuous throughout the game.
