MATCH REPORT : WIDNES V ST. HELENS 1 OCTOBER 1887 St. Helens journeyed to Widnes on Saturday, and as the ‘Chemicals’ were weak behind being short of Plumpton, Farrell and Parkinson, it was generally thought that they would be beaten, but as often occurs in football, the unexpected happened. The Widnes team prevailed by one goal and one try to nil. The try coming from Morris for Widnes.The result was mainly due to the Widnes forwards that the result was attained.The game was a capital one to watch being of a fast and open character throughout, and some very good individual play was witnessed. |
