MATCH REPORT : ST HELENS V ECCLES 26 MARCH 1887 The return match took place in St. Helens before a good number of spectators. The game was very fast and exciting throughout. In the first half Tom Finney gained a clever try for the Saints, whilst Lythgoe scored a try for Eccles. Neither try was improved. In the second half St. Helens had a decided advantage, particularly in the forwards. Both teams scored a try apiece and the match ended in a draw in favour of St. Helens. Richard Leatherbarrow, Daniel McLaughlin, Ralph Harwood and Harry Varley were prominent for ST. Helens. Score: - St. Helens 2 tries and six minors to Eccles two tries and two minors. |
