MATCH REPORT : ST HELENS V WIGAN 13 SEPTEMBER 1890 South West Lancashire League match What may be regarded as one of the most important matches the St. Helen’s Club have arranged took place last Saturday afternoon on the new ground at Knowsley Road. A large attendance of about 3000 spectators were present. The result was like what it has been in most of the fixtures between Wigan and St. Helens - the Wiganers coming out victorious with a good score. St. Helens will need a new full back if they are to win many matches this season. The first try was completely given away by Walter Lomax and after this St. Helens never seemed to have a look in. Wigan played their usual dashing game with both the forwards and the backs completely overplaying the homesters. W. Halliwell, the popular Wigan half back was seriously injured on the field by coming into contact with Billy Cross and he is not likely to play for several weeks. There is a general impression that Cross was playing a rough game and that there was more severe tackling that was necessary. At one point in the game, the Saints appeared to be “fagged out” and playing erratically. Score: - Wigan 3 goals, 2 tries and 1 minor to St. Helens nil. |
