MATCH REPORT : MOSSLEY V ST. HELENS 19 NOVEMBER 1887

Although the sad fatality (former Recs and Saints player Willie Taylor) at St. Helens last week cast quite a gloom over rugby circles, a very fair number of spectators gathered to see the first fixture with the Mossley Club. The ground was on the hard side, the top being rather slippery making the ball very unreliable.Accurate passing was out of the question and the game was principally confined to the forwards. In the first half Mosssley made a very poor show, the forwards being fairly beaten and the ‘glass-blowers’ had matters much their own way. Morris of Widnes gained a try off his own kick by smart following up. The place kick was missed.

After the change of ends the Saints pulled themselves together and after a good dribble forced the home team to touch down. That seemed to spur Mossley to great exertion and Jas Winterbottom gained a very good try which was improved for the premier point by Lawton. When the whistle went for ’no side’ Mossley had won the hotly contested game by one goal, one try and two minors to St. Helens one try and two minors.
