MATCH REPORT : Aspull V St. Helens Rangers 2 December 1882

These clubs met for the first time at Aspull, near Wigan. The home captain having won the spin, elected to play with the strong wind in his favour. Borthwick kicked off to the left, and Finney following up well prevented the Aspull backs returning, and the first scrimmage took place in the home 25. For about ten minutes play was confined to this part of the ground, but was ultimately removed by a strong high kick by Pilkington, which gave time for the home team forwards to get up and wait for the descent of the ball. This success they followed up by a loose dribble into the Rangers 25., and eventually forced Tickle to save. Borthwick dropped out from the 25 flag, and the ball was played into touch about the half way flag. On the throw outParr got hold and dashed through the Aspull forward lines, looked like overcoming the remaining opposition, but his progress was arrested by Richards bringing him down by the legs. A scrimmage followed, and on the ball coming out it was passed to McLaughlin who made a dashing run for the Aspull goal line, but was held a few yards from it. On the succeeding play the ball was quickly taken into the Rangers’ 25, and Seddon picking up ran for the Rangers’ line, and although collared by McLaughlin almost over the line they both fell over it, and Aspull claimed a try, which was allowed. The place was difficult, was taken by J. Pilkington, who made a very good attempt at goal, to scored the desired point. Half time was then called and ends changed.

Seddon kicked off, and Tickle getting hold ran the leather to the right and was pushed into touch by the half way flag. Following the throw out the ball was taken to the other side of the field , and for some time the play took mostly the form of scrimmage. Ultimately, the visitors took the ball into the Aspull 25. Her the Rangers’ three-quarter made strenuous efforts to run in, but were frustrated by the excellent collaring of the home team. The play was forced into neutral ground, the back divans of both teams making the game very exciting by their long runs and long kicking, neither team going any point.

Score:- Aspull one try and one touchdown. St. Helens Rangers nil.
