MATCH REPORT : ST. HELENS V MAINDEE 14 NOVEMBER 1889 The Maindee Football team have gone to Lancashire on a three days’ tour, and naturally a good deal of interest has been taken in their journey. The first fixture came off last night, and it is somewhat disappointing to learn that they were defeated. There is every allowance to be made for the visitors, however, for the match came off in the evening after dark, after they had travelled a distance of 200 miles, so that guy must have been tired and out of form after so long a journey, while their opponents were fresh to their work. Moreover, the match was played by electric light, and this was entirely a new experience to the Maindee boys. After travelling all day on a train it must have been perplexing to them. “Maindee nil: St. Helens 4 tries.” This we think may be taken as authentic. The visitors will have a rest today, and will, no doubt, give a better account of themselves against Widnes tomorrow. It should be mentioned also that the Maindee Club are playing minus Bulger, one of their regular and most active three-quarter backs, and who has shown unusually good form this season. |
