ADAPTABLE AND ADVENTUROUS PUBLICAN

Joseph was a local lad who was born in St Helens in Spring 1864. His father, Thomas, was a farmer.

He made his debut for the Saints on the 27th of September 1884 in a drawn affair with Warrington. Joseph was comfortable playing in the three-quarters or in the pack of forwards. He was a regular member of the team throughout the 1880s and up to his last match against Birkenhead Wanderers on the 14th of March 1891. Saints gained an away victory in his final game thanks to a try from Thomas Duncan. We have 79 recorded appearances for Joseph though this could well be higher as some team sheets from the earlier years are somewhat incomplete.

In 1891 he was a single chap living at 101 College Street in St. Helens and working as a barman. The following year he had married Sarah Ellen Bradburn in St. Helens. Ten years later, matters had progressed and Thomas and Ellen were bringing up two children. The family had moved to the public house named Patrick’s Pub at 67 Fontenoy Street in Liverpool. Unsurprisingly, it was an “Irish” pub and by all accounts painted in green. The pub was known as “The Dart” by its clientele and full of life most nights. Joseph was the named publican of the establishment. By 1911, he had moved on, perhaps the management of a busy pub had taken its toll. That said, Joseph was still working as a barman in someone else’s inn.

Joseph died in Liverpool in January 1924 at the age of 59.
