MATCH REPORT : ST. HELENS V BLACKLEY 15 JANUARY 1887

The return match between the two sides ended in the same result as the former match with a victory for St. Helens. The Saints were without three of their best forwards in Richard Leatherbarrow, Daniel McLaughlin and Thomas Pennington whilst the visitors had the advantage of seven players from the Birch F.C. The St. Helens ground was in splendid condition, and a well contested game was witnessed. The Saints eventually proved their superiority in all points of the game, the score being at the finish : - St. Helens two tries and seven minors to Blackley nothing.

For the home team Albert Tickle, Joseph Halton, Ted Foremen, Finney and Anders at the back played a splendid game, also did Alec Borthwick Harry Varley, Ralph Harwood and John Hampson in the forward department. For the visitors Smethurst, Council. Houldsworth and Hargreaves were most prominent.
