MATCH REPORT : ST. HELENS V ROCHDALE ST. CLEMENTS 4 JANUARY 1890 After a long exasperating struggle with the engine at St. Helens Junction< the Rochdale St. Clements lot concluded that they could not work it anyhow. Then team arrived at the Dentons Green ground in a conveyancing vehicle. The crowd had dwindled to around 600 by the time Alec Borthwick got the game under way. The two teams agreed to play two halves of twenty minutes. At the end of matters Rochdale St. Clements claimed a draw with 1 goal and 1 minor to St. Helens 2 tries. Yet again under the present scoring system the value of a good place kicker cannot be underestimated. |
