MATCH REPORT : ST HELENS V WALTON 20 MARCH 1886

THE WEST LANCASHIRE AND BORDER TOWNS RUGBY UNION CHALLENGE CUP SECOND ROUND

The game was played at the ground of Bootle FC which provided a neutral venue on this occasion. Brodie kicked off on behalf of Walton. Within a few minutes St. Helens had to concede a minor point, which was later equalised by William Haselden kicking the ball dead. For the next period of time up to change ends the Saints had the better of play. Joseph Halton scored a try which was improved into a goal by Haselden. At the break St. Helens led by 11 points to one.

St. Helens continued to hold the upper hand in the second half and used their feet to great advantage and always following up with great smartness. At “no side” St. Helens were the victors by one goal and four minors to two minors for the Walton team. For Walton Roberts James and Hancox played well, while for the winners Alec Borthwick, William Haselden, Thomas Pennington and Joseph Halton were to the fore.
