Biography of Jack Dearden

HERITAGE NO :
Jack Dearden

COAT HOLDER

Jack was born in St Helens in 1862. His early life is a little sketchy. He was the stepson of William Andrews, an iron dresser who has moved to St Helens from Woolwich in Kent. Mother Caroline was from St. Helens.

The family lived in Water Street, St Helens in 1881 and Jack worked as an apprentice iron moulder.

In the early 1920s, the founder of the Saints Supporters Club, Jesse Skipper, invited former players to write to him with their reminiscences of the early days of rugby in St Helens. Jack Dearden responded with the following account of his debut. It is a quite fascinating insight to the nature of the sport at the time.

“I reminder going with the team to Liverpool to play a team called Blundelsands, old Alec Borthwick being the captain at the time. I went to watch them play and to hold as many of their clothes as I possibly could. When the team went on to the field they were a man short and Borthwick asked me to play. I told him I didn’t understand the game but he said I should manage all right. I dropped the clothes on the ground and took my coat and vest off and went into the play.”

Although he had to remain in his wet clothes all day, Jack enjoyed the experience and went on to play well over a century of games for the Club. He was noted as one the Saints’ most reliable and toughest tacklers. A team photograph from 1910 shows Jack as trainer to the Saints’ senior team.

Beyond rugby married Mary Ellen May. The couple had one daughter and two sons and lived at 111, Harris Street., St Helens in 1901. Jack enjoyed the experience and went on to play well over a century of games for the Club. He was noted as one the Saints’ most reliable and toughest tacklers. A team photograph from 1910 shows Jack as trainer to the Saints’ senior team.

Somewhat surprisingly, in the next decade Jack and his family moved to Ireland. In 1911 they were living in Templemore Avenue, in the district of Pottinger., Belfast, Ireland where he worked as an iron moulder most probably in the shipyards. He was 85 years old when he died in Belfast.
