MATCH REPORT : HUNSLET V ST. HELENS 28 DECEMBER 1889 The Saints mad their customary journey to face the cream of Yorkshire in the post Christmas period. This year they travelled to the Parkside ground to face a rampant Hunslet team parading some of the game’s elite including the inspirational; Albert Goldthorpe. Unfortunately, the Saints were outclassed on the day. Hunslet signalled their intent early in the proceedings with Albert Goldthorpe producing clever kicks which pinned St. Helms in their own 25. Lapping for the Yorkshiremen attained a good try from a scrummage. The score was improved by Albert Goldthorpe. Allen forced a minor for the the Saints but as half time was called Hunslet had already built up an unassailable lead by 3 goals and 1 minor to a solitary minor for Sr. Helens. The second half was very much a continuance of Hunslet dominance. Their exciting play and judicious kicks had St. Helens under constant pressure. The Saints escaped several misses at dropped and place goals before James Goldthorpe gained a try for the home team. The try was converted. The house forwards had a clear advantage and one of them, Tom Stevens, struggled over the line for a try. Albert Goldthorpe obliged with his fifth goal of the day. Short and exciting play around the centre was witnessed until the conclusion of play. Score: - Hunslet, 5 goals and 7 minors to St. Helens 1 minor |
