MATCH REPORT : ST. HELENS V KENDAL HORNETS 9 MARCH 1889

The Saints welcomed their old friends from Kendal for another close encounter. Although the St. Helens team were greater in stature, the men from Kendal used every opportunity to dodge and weave their way to victory. Although, the game was a pleasant encounter for the spectators, the match may be remembered for other reasons.

In the St. Helens team that day was a certain Frederick Wells, a member of the Silver King Touring Company based in London. The thespians were playing at the Theatre Royal in St. Helens for a run of 7 days the character “Cripps” in the play was played by Frederick Wells. In the match against Kendal Hornets wells partnered Billy Cross at half back. Though his rugby play was by no means brilliant, he showed that he had a knowledge of the game and made a few nice passes. He was often greeted with cries of “Well done, Cripps.” Frederick Wells is a Middlesex County man and generally plays with the leading Club in the town in which the Company are settled for the week.

In another aside, a little ceremony on the field of play took place before the commencement of the match when handsome caps were presented to Ted Foreman, James Graham, Tom Sudlow, Billy Lund, George Sumner and Joe Allen . Joe Allen’s cap was subscribed for by his fellow workmen at Hardship Chemical works. The other caps were subscribed for by admirers of the players. The St. Helens president, Mr. J Mearns presented the caps and told the Hornets how much the St. Helens Club appreciated the services of the Kendal men. The Hornets heartily cheered their old comrades as they donned their caps.
