MATCH REPORT : ST HELENS V BURY 7 JANUARY 1888 The match was played before a good number of spectators. Both teams were well represented although both regular full backs Albert Heaton for St. Helens and S. Roberts for Bury were absent. The game was rather one-sided and the Saints won by one goal, three tries and ten minors to one minor for Bury. John Hardman scored two excellent tries for St. Helens and Morris added another. Morris also covered a place into a goal. For the home team Ralph Twist, Daniel McLaughlin, John Hartman, Tom Finney, Ralph Johnson and William Holt were very conspicuous in the forwards. Whilst in the St. Helens back division William Haselden was very safe at full back, George McNelly, Morris and Edward Eastham were dashing three-quarters and Fred Liptrot at half back was excellent. Carlow, Holt, Hall and Handley played well for Bury. |
