KEY FORWARD SUFFERED EARLY DEATH

Daniel was a a local lad who was born in St Helens in July 1865. He was one of three brothers who played for the Saints in the 1880s. His father, John, was a Railway Pass Guard who sadly died when Daniel was an infant. He married Rachel Owen on the 16th of December 1883 and they had two children, Frederick and Ethel. Daniel lived at 111 Stanhope Street in the town and worked as a coal miner.

Daniel found himself lodging with Catherine Rankin in 1891. Catherine was the mother of two Saints’ players, Martin and David Rankin.

He made his debut for the Saints on the 13th of March 1886 in the away fixture against Wavertree. The tough forward was helped St. Helens to victory that day. This was the first of 68 appearances that Daniel made for the Club over the following three years. He made his final appearance for the Saints on the 22nd of April 1889 in the home victory over Ossett.

Daniel died in January 1896 at the young age of just 30. His death was registered in Prescot.
