Ralph was born in Sutton, St. Helens in July 1862, His father, Joseph, was a collier. He lived at 3 Number One Court, Russell Street, Sutton. His next door neighbour was James Webb, who would be instrumental in progressing the next phase of rugby in St. Helens in 1879 and 1880. It leaves little to the imagination as to how Ralph was recruited to try his hand at the Saints. It turned out to be a master stroke recruitment.

Ralph made his debut for St Helens RFC on the 1st of December, 1883 against local outfit Sutton. He played in the forwards that day as the match ended all square. Ralph soon found a regular berth in the team in the pack of forwards. Indeed, Ralph proved to be a mainstay for the Club for the next 11 seasons. We have him down as playing 114 matches for the Club but the paucity of records in the early years of the 1880s might one to conclude that this number was much higher. His final outing came on the 16th of April 1891 when the Saints ran out winners against Birkenhead Wanderers.

He married Alice Pennington in West Derby on Christmas Day 1889 and the couple lived in Russell Street, Sutton, St. Helens. By the year 1911 Ralph was recorded as being a miner unable to work. The nature of his employment must have proved a heavy toll on his body. Ralph died in St. Helens in late 1921 at the age of 59.
