MATCH REPORT : ST. HELENS V WARRINGTON 24 APRIL 1886 On Good Friday before about 6000 spectators St. Helens faced the ‘pot holders’ Warrington at Dentons Green, St. Helens. Warrington won the toss and played with a stiff breeze which was blowing. For the first few minutes the Saints played a fast game and quickly gained two minors. About this time Thomas Pennington suffered a sprained ankle and lad to leave the ground. Soon after Warrington scored a try which was improved into a goal and further added a minor point. After the change of ends St. Helens had far the best of it and secured a try from William Grice and four minors. At “no side” St. Helens had one try and six minors to Warrington one goal and three minors. |
