SAINT BECAME BOWLER

William was born in October 1865 in St. Helens. His farther John was a chemical labourer from Ashton -in- Makerfield. His mother Betsey hailed from Buttonwood. In 1871 they were living at 10 Talbot Street, St. Helens. The family later moved across town to live at Peasley Cross Lane.

He made his debut for St. Helens RFC on the 12th of January 1884 against local rivals St. Helens Recs, very much a Glass versus Chemicals affair for William. The Saints lost that home fixture but the classy three-quarter went on to play at least another 69 matches for the Saints. His final match was against top Westmorland club, Kendal Hornets, on the 19th of April 1890 The chemical man finished on the winning side that day. Interestingly, the Saints would have only another three matches on the Dentons Green pitch before they moved lock, stock and barrel to their new home in Knowsley Road.

William married Elizabeth Middlehurst in July 1899 and the couple at 225 Marshalls Cross Road. They were to have one daughter named Margaret. and William is described as a ’chemist in the chemical works’. The 1911 Census tells us that William lived with his wife Elizabeth at 159 Speakman Road, Dentons Green. They have a daughter, Margaret, aged 10. William had progressed to become a foreman at the United Alkali Company works.

William died on the 20th March 1932 aged 66.
