Biography of Charles Anders |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Charles Anders ANDERS AND ANDERS COINCIDENTALLY Charles Anders was born in St Helens on the 22nd of March 1864. His father Charles was a glassworks manager. Initially the family dwelling was in Westfield Street however by 1881, the Anders had moved to 123 Croppers Hill. Charles, aged 17, was described as a solicitor’s clerk. It was in this role that Charles trained to become a bookkeeper, a profession that he would return to in later life. On the rugby field Charles made his debut for the St Helens Rangers on the 14th of January 1882 against Sutton Seconds. It was a winning debut and Charles played in the forwards. It is interesting to note that another young solicitor’s clerk made in his debut in the same match, a certain Albert Edward Anders. Remarkably the two were not obviously related. Charles was active in the club until the end of the 1885-86 season. In his final outing recorded, Charles played as a half back as the Saints went down in an away fixture against Birch. Evidently, Charles seemed to team up with his father in the glass works. In an abrupt change of career he seems to have spent much of the following twenty years employed as a diamond setter and glass cutter. The family moved to the salubrious St Annes area where several of the original Saints teams resided. His father died in 1899 leaving the princely sum of £3303. In the same year Charles married Ellen Aspinall in Christ Church, Eccleston. They proceeded to have three children Eric, Marjorie and Edith and moved to live at 214 Dentons Green Lane, St Helens. It would appear that after the turn of the century Charles decided to keep books again. His father-in-law was a grocer and the 1911 Census records him as living with his wife, Ellen, at Springfield, 27, Hard Lane , St Helens and working as a ’provision agent and grocer’s clerk’. Charles died in St Helens on the 17th of October 1912, aged just 48. He left a tidy sum of £952 to his widow. |
