Thomas was a local lad who was born in Sutton, St Helens in early 1866. His father, Henry, was a coal miner and Tom followed his father down the pit. The family lived at 14 Manor Street in Sutton In 1881 at the age of fifteen he was working in a coal mine as a block winder. In the same year Tom was to make his debut for the Saints.

His inaugural match was on the the 7th of November 1881 in a game against Sutton Seconds. The away fixture was literally round the corner from Tom’s home, close to Peasley Cross Road and near to the modern Saints’ Stadium. Just shy of his sixteenth birthday, Tom played in the three-quarters that day as the St. Helens Rangers emerged as victors.

In all he is recorded as playing in 64 matches in seven seasons for St. Helens but because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period, the number of appearances is likely to be much higher. Towards the end of his career, Tom had graduated to play in the pack of forwards. His final appearance that we have recorded was on the 10th of March 1888 in a away fixture against a very strong Tyldesley team. The Saints were defeated that day.

Tom married Mary Ellen Doyle in the summer of 1894 and they went on to have four children. In 1911 Tom and his family were living at 147 Sherdley Road in St. Helens and he was still operating as a coal hewer.

Top died in St. Helens in September 1928 at the age of 62.
