MATCH REPORT : ST. HELENS RECS V ST. HELENS RANGERS 18 NOVEMBER 1882

The match resulted in an easy win for the Recreation team., the scores being : - St. Helens Recs 2 goals and 5 touchdowns to St. Helens Rangers nil.

The Rangers having won the toss elected to play with the wind. Pennington for the Recreation having kicked off, the ball was followed up and the play for some time was confined to the Rangers’ 25. The Rangers tries to relieve the pressure with some quick passing, but the Recreation forwards following up well, stopped the runs. From a scrimmage the Recs’ forwards forced the ball over the goal line to score a touchdown. The ball was dropped out and was quickly returned. A scrimmage ensued from which Green of the Recs got the ball away and with some good dribbling got it over the goal line and scored the first try for the Recreation. The try was a very hard one being within three yards of touch but was splendidly converted into a goal by the full back , Albert Tickle. From this until half time the players was of a very even character, some good play being shown.

After half time the play became very fast, , the scrimmages being looser, and more dribbling being done. A good run by Roberts of the Recreation took the ball to the Rangers’ quarter flag. From the scrimmage that ensued the ball was forced over the line and a touchdown was scored. Some quick play by the Recreation got the ball over the line for another touchdown. After this the plane was very even for some time with the Rangers trying to score. However, the Recs were too quick and the forwards carried the ball right down the field. When Pennington got hold of the leather he carried it over the line for a second try. This was also converted into a goal by Albert Tickle. From that moment until the call of time the play was dominated by the Recs and resulted in two further touchdowns for the Recreation.

John Gregson, Alec Borthwick, Jim Webb and Edward Chadwick played well for the Rangers whilst Pennington, Hankinson, Clegg, Green and Roberts played well for the Recs.

No fewer than eight of the Recs’ side were former or future Saints’ players which again demonstrates the flexibility of the sport within the town and illustrates the good relations between the two Clubs.
