MATCH REPORT : ST HELENS RANGERS V SIMMS CROSS 6 NOVEMBER 1880 This football match was noisy throughout, owing chiefly to the spectators, who continually came over the boundary line, and greatly impeded the play of Simms Cross. The goal was disputed on account of Fred Traverse (St. Helens Rangers) deliberately pushing Smith of Simms Cross on his face when each were running to touch the ball down. This caused considerable disturbance , which ended in the umpire for the Rangers, a chap named Molyneux, being objected to on account of his language to the Widnes umpire, Mr. Charlie Evans. The tries were obtained by Traverse for St. Helens and Hardman for Simms Cross. When time was called the score was: - St. Helens Rangers one goal, one disputed goal, one try and three touchdowns. Simms Cross - one poster and four touchdowns |
