Biography of William Beck |
---|
HERITAGE NO : William Beck COMFORT BECKONING William was born In Old Hartley, Northumberland in 1861. His father was a painter who brought his family to St. Helens in the 1870s. In 1881 they were living in Clyde Street, St Helens and William was pursuing a career in engineering. He made his debut for the Saints on the 6th of November 1880 in the home victory over Simms Cross Reserves, a team, from Widnes. In all he is recorded as playing in 5 matches for St. Helens but because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period, the number of appearances is likely to be higher. William operated mostly at full back or in the back three-quarters and his last recorded game was against Sutton Seconds on 14th of January 1882 which ended in a victory for the Saints. His employment must have been well rewarded for in 1911 we can see William living at Park View, Grosvenor Road in the salubrious St. Annes area of St. Helens. He was labelled as a General Manager in Engineering and his abode was serviced by Irish born Nellie Riley, a domestic servant. William died in St. Helens in January 1931 at the age of 69. |
