HERITAGE NO : Richard Pennington CROSS OVER KING Richard was born in St Helens on the 29th of April, 1855. His father, also named, Richard, was a blacksmith. He followed his father into the smith and worked as a strike. He was recruited into the ‘Originals’ and his first recorded match was on the 25th of November, 1876 against Wigan. The Saints lost the match that day. He was is unique in that he played matches in all three name eras - Originals, St. Helens Rangers and St Helens RFC. In total we have him recorded as playing in 18 matches but he probably played in may more as we have fewer team lists for the earlier seasons. His last recorded match was in an away loss to Walkden on the 22nd of November 1884. He married Maria Gillies on the 19th of July, 1875. The couple went on to have 5 children. Richard was a manual worker throughout his working life and had various jobs as a labourer in chemical and glass factories. Richard died in St. Helens in November 1914 at the age of 58.
