William was born in St Helens in 1858. His father, also named William, worked as a labourer in one of the chemical works of the town. His family grew up in Rigby Street in the centre of St. Helens and he still lived there with his widowed mother in 1881. William worked as a bottle packer in a glass works.

He made his debut for the St. Helens Rangers against Simms Cross Reserves on the 25th of November, 1880. It proved to be a winning start for William. There after William featured regularly in the pack of forwards for the team and in all we have him recorded as playing 28 matches for the Club. He lived in the crowded centre of St. Helens close to many of his team mates. He played his final game for St. Helens on the 23rd of April 1886 against Warrington, unfortunately he ended top ion the losing side that day.

William died in St Helens in December 1912 at the age of 55.
