HERITAGE NO : James Cooper GROCER James was a local lad who was born in St Helens in 1859. His father, also named, James, was a grocer. In 1881 the family lived at 20/22 St. Thomas Street, St. Helens. The shop would have been very busy as their house was in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men and the rebranded Eccleston Rangers were scouring the streets on a recruitment drive and finding young James in the local shop would not have been a difficult task. James junior helped his father for a weekly wage. James appears to have been adaptable on the field fulfilling various roles both in the backs and the forwards. He made his debut for the St. Helens Rangers on the 6th of November, 1880 and the Saints proved too strong for the Simms Cross team from Widnes. In all he is recorded as playing in 5 matches for St. Helens but because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period, the number of appearances is likely to be higher. He was also likely to have played for the Second team as well. His last recorded match was against Widnes Excelsior on the 28th of January 1882 when the Saints triumphed in an away fixture. On the 10th of June 1882 James married Mary Matthews but sadly James died In St. Helens in the summer of 1889 at the age of 39. James left behind his widow Mary and four children at their Hope Street residence.
