Biography of Henry Lea

HERITAGE NO :
Henry Lea

ROVING TEACHER

Henry was born in St. Helens in July 1863. In 1881 he was living with his parents at 250 Park Road, Parr, St. Helens. His father, Paul was a coal miner and quite unusually for Victorian times Henry was an only child. At the age of 17 he was a teacher probably in the school where he attended as a child.

He made his debut for the St Helens Rangers on the 6th of November 1880 against Simms Cross Reserves. We believe that this was the last occasion that the Saints played at Queens Park in the St Annes area of the town. In the following week the Club were issued with a notice to quit the land. It is pleasing to report that their farewell to Prescot Road game ended in a victory for St. Helens.

In his next two matches Henry was again on winning sides against St. Helens Recs Reserves and Newton le Willows. The last recorded match for Henry took place on the 5th of February 1881 when the St. Helens Recs Reserves ended Henry’s run of successes at the Saints’ new ground on Ralph Smith’s paddock near Boundary Road. In all he is recorded as playing in 4 matches for St. Helens Rangers but because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period, the number of appearances is likely to be higher. He was also likely to have played for the Second team as well.

The 1891 Census records Henry as living in the School House Thornham in Glasson Dock near Lancaster. He had married Elizabeth Hannah Salthouse in Liverpool in 1886 and already they had two children. It is interesting to note that the job also came with the added bonus of a servant. The last we hear of Henry was in 1911 when he had moved jobs to work at Brindle School near Chorley. Furthermore, the couple had added another son to their family.

Henry died In Chorley in July 1938 at the age of 75.
