HERITAGE NO : Fred Traverse BLACKSMITH Fred was a local lad who was born in St Helens in April 1861. His father, James, was a porter. As a child Fred live in Anne Street, St. Helens. Their house was in the midst of the densely populated area of terraced housing quite close to the centre of the town. This was in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men. Fred worked as a blacksmith. He made his debut for Eccleston Rangers on the 1st of November 1879 against a Widnes Reserves team. This was their first match together as they were transforming from a gang of spectators to a rugby team. The new boys lost to the ‘Chemicals’ that day. His Saints’ debut came on the 27th of March 1880 against Widnes. Many former Eccleston Rangers lads were completing the season’s fixtures for the Originals in final game of the campaign. The Saints played at Widnes and went down to a hefty defeat. In all the half back is recorded as playing in 8 matches for St. Helens but because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period, the number of appearances is likely to be higher. Fred was certainly in most Saints’ team-sheets that we have access to in the period from 1879 to 1882 in the name eras of Eccleston Rangers and St. Helens Rangers. Fred married Kate Louise Finnegan and their had four children.I n 1911 he was living in the rugby heartland at 55 Kirkland Street where the majority of the early Rangers had lived. Fred died in St. Helens on the 21st of August 1936 at the age of 75. At his death he was a resident of Leslie Road in Thatto Heath, St. Helens. |
