Biography of Joseph Twist

HERITAGE NO :
Joseph Twist

ENDED UP IN BOLTON

Joseph was a local lad who was born in St Helens in 1857. His father, Peter, was a coal miner. In 1881 he was living at 58 Albert Street, St. Helens and working as a labourer in a coal mine. On the 30th of August 1875 he married Ann Latif and the couple went on to have 8 children.

Joseph made his debut for the St. Helens Rangers on the 6th of November 1880 against the Widnes side Simms Cross Reserves. The match was played at Queens Park off Prescot Road. Indeed it was the last time that the Saints would play on that ground as they were evicted from their pitch in the following week. The Saints were victorious that day. Joseph played in the three-quarters and he is found in two other matches in that season. In all he is recorded as playing in 4 matches for St. Helens but because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period, the number of appearances is likely to be higher. He certainly played for the Second team as well over many seasons. His final first team appearance was in the away fixture against Werneth on the 29th of December 1888. The return journey to Oldham did not bring any awards as the Saints lost that day.

Not long after his final first team game. Joseph moved his family to live at 155 Bridgewater Street, Farnworth, Bolton. He had trained to become an engine fitter.

Joseph died in Farnworth in January 1937 at the age of 79.
