Biography of John Williams |
---|
HERITAGE NO : John Williams WELSH FORWARD John was one of several Welshmen who came to St. Helens seeking job opportunities in the coal mines of South Lancashire and ended up playing for the Saints. He was born in Ffinongroew, Flintshire in November 1859. In 1871 he was living with his parents in Sutton. His father, James, was a labourer who died in 1880. After his father’s death, John went to live with his brother’s family at 13 Rolling Mill Lane in Sutton. He would remain in that thoroughfare for the rest of his life. He made his debut for St. Helens Rangers on the 6th of November 1880 against Simms Cross Reserves. The game was played at the Rangers’ home ground at Queens Park just off Prescot Road. It just so happened to be the last ever occasion that the Saints would play there; the following week they would be evicted from their playing field. It turned out to be a fond farewell for the St. Helens side as they completed that chapter of their residence with a victory. John was a forward who is recorded as playing in 3 matches for St. Helens but because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period, the number of appearances is likely to be higher. He was also likely to have played for the Second team as well. His last recorded match was on the 7th of November 1881 when the Saints beat local outfit Sutton to gain an away win. He married Catherine Williams in October 1881 and they proceeded to have 6 children. In 1901 he was living a 1 Rolling Mill Lane in Sutton, St. Helens and was working as a hewer in a local cola mine. John died in St. Helens in January 1921 at the age of 61. |
