Biography of William Clitheroe |
---|
HERITAGE NO : William Clitheroe TOUGH UPBRINGING William Clitheroe was born in April 1857 in St Helens. His father James was a glass polisher and his mother Jane came from Aston in Makerfield. To say that his early life was traumatic would be an understatement. When he was almost seven years of age his father was convicted of the murder of Mary Woods. It was widely believed in the community that Mary woods was the lover of James Clitheroe and was carrying his child at the time of her death. On the 16th of April, 1864 the father of William Clitheroe was hanged at Kirkdale Prison and his remains were buried in the prison grounds. One cannot begin to image the effect of this on Jane and her young family. The 1871 Census shows Jane as a widow and trying to make ends meet by working as a washer woman. In the 1879/80 season William was one of the young lads who regularly had watched the Originals play at the Queens Park Ground. He joined the newly formed Eccleston Rangers who played on the same pitch as the St. Helens RFC. He played regularly for that team in that campaign. William made his debut for St Helens Rangers against Simms Cross Reserves on the 6th of November, 1880. The newly monikered team won that particular game. He became a regular member of the team and was adaptable enough to play in the backs and the forwards. William married Mary Esther Halsall at the Parish Church in St Helens on 4th of August 1884. They went on to have four children and moved eventually to 10 Albion Street, St Helens. William had several jobs including general labouring and working as a metallic brick burner in a local brickworks. William died in his hometown on the 22nd of January 1931 at the age of 73. |
