HERITAGE NO : Alexander Waters DEEP WATERS St Helens Rangers had two players named A. Waters in their teams during the St. Helens Rangers era. Both worked as stone masons. However, they were not related. He was born in Liverpool in July 1859. Alexander’s family moved to St. Helens in the 1860s and settled in the Thatto Heath area of St. Helens. His father, John, was a gardener from Hawick in Scotland. In 1881 Alexander was living with his parents In Elephant Lane, St. Helens. He made his debut as a forward for the St. Helens Rangers on the 6th of November 1880 against Simms Cross Reserves. The match was played at Queens Park off Prescot Road and it was the last time that the Saints would play at that ground. In a fitting farewell the match ended in a victory for Alexander and his team mates. His last recorded match was two weeks later with the opposition being the St. Helens Recs Reserves. It was played at the Rangers’ new home pitch on Ralph Smith’s paddock. The Saints were triumphant again in that game. In 1881 he was living with his parents in Elephant Lane, St. Helens and working as a stone mason. He married Elizabeth Cowley In Ormskirk in 1882 and they had three children. After living in Argyle Street in the town, Alexander decided to emigrate to Essex, New Jersey in the USA. We assume that he died there sometime later. |
