 HERITAGE NO : Edward Chadwick PETER STREET GANG Edward was born in St Helens in October 1862. His father was born in Warrington and worked as a glass bottle maker. By 1881 the family had moved to 92 Peter Street, St Helens. Their house was in the midst of the densely populated area of terraced housing close to the centre of the town. This was in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men. Like his father Edward worked as a glass bottle maker. Edward played his first match for the newly named St Helens Rangers against Simms Cross Reserves on the 6th of November 1880. Edward played in the forwards and the Saints were victorious. He went on to play a further 16 matches for the Club. He married Alice Mercer and the couple had three children, namely William, Peter and Elsie. The family moved to Crossley Road in Thatto Heath and then close to the town centre in Liverpool Road. Edward died in St Helens in April 1916 at the age of 53. |
