Biography of Richard Everson |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Richard Everson CAS LAD AND BOTTLE FINISHER Richard was born in Castleford , Yorkshire on the 15th on the December, 1858. His family worked there in the glass industry with his father, Richard, being employed as a glass bottle maker. The family first moved to Liverpool in the 1860s and then onwards to St. Helens in the following decade. In 1881 the family resided at 57 Kirkland Street, St. Helens and Richard followed his father’s footsteps into a glass factory to work as a bottle maker. Their house was in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men. The rebranded Eccleston Rangers were scouring the streets on a recruitment drive and they soon knocked on Richard’s door. Richard made his debut for Eccleston Rangers on the 29th of November 1879 in the away fixture against the established club Mersey View based in Runcorn. The Rangers lost that day. We do not have the full team list for that inaugural fixture. However, the article does highlight three players from the visitors who played well, namely Fred Traverse, Charles Lewis and Richard Everson. His Saints’ debut came on the 13th of March 1880 against Widnes. It was the first match that the former Eccleston Rangers lads were completing the season’s fixtures for the Originals. The contest was marred by almost riotous invasions of the pitch by the local spectators. However, because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period, the number of appearances is likely to be higher. Richard played his last recorded match for St. Helens Rangers on the 4th of March 1882 in a home loss to local rivals St. Helens Recs. Richard married Alice Boardman in August 1881 and she went on to bear ten children. In 1911 the large family were living at 14 Cambridge Road, St. Helens along with Richard’s 82 year old grandmother. Richard was recorded as a bottle finisher. Richard Everson died in the summer of 1931 in St. Helens at the age of 72. |
