Biography of Lawrence Kershaw

HERITAGE NO :
Lawrence Henry Kershaw

ANALYTICAL CHEMIST

Lawrence was born in Newburgh, Lancashire in early 1867. Lawrence’s father, Thomas was a chemist and emanated from Ashby de la Zouch. In 1881 Lawrence was at boarding school at Blundelsands, Lancashire at the age of 14. We can assume both that his school introduced Lawrence to rugby and that he was an exceptional player for his age.

Our records show that he made his debut for the Saints against Simms Cross Reserves on the 6th of November 1880. Those mathematicians amongst you will conclude that this would make Lawrence just 13 years old. He also played in the forwards that day. The context of the match might go some way to explain the sense of incredulity. He was part of fledgling side who were possibly struggling to filed a full team on some weeks. Lawrence would continue to feature sporadically in the team over several years. His seventeenth and final first team match was in the away fixture against Liverpool Wanderers on the 19th of February, 1887. In the same team that day was a player who probably had a great impact on the life of Lawrence, namely Charles Anders.

We can assume that the family relocated to live at 120, Croppers Hill, St.Helens in the early 1880s. Bearing in mind that three of the children were born in St. Helens, it was very much a return journey with father Thomas working as an industrial chemist in the towns glassworks. Sadly his father died in 1889 and left Lawrence’s mother to live on her own means. Lawrence, like his father, was described as an analytical chemist at the glass bottle works, a very well paid job at the time. Charles Anders, his erstwhile Saints’ team mate lived opposite Lawrence on Croppers Hill. In the same household was Charles’s cousin, Lucy Anders. Lawrence was living at 30 Boundary Road, St Helens when he married Lucy on the first of June 1899 but tragedy struck almost immediately. Lucy was taken ill and died within two months. Lawrence’s mother had recently moved to Totnes in Devon where she would spend the rest of her days. Lawrence decided to stay in St Helens and live in rented accommodation.

In 1911, Lawrence is 44 and living as a boarder in Ruskin Drive, St. Helens. He remained in the town to live and work before dying on the 19th of February 1931 at the age of 64.
