Biography of Arthur Rudd |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Arthur Rudd TRICKY TO CATCH Arthur proved to be quite an elusive player to identify. He was born on the 1st of April 1864. In 1881 he was in the process of moving to St. Helens from the Midlands. Unlike many of his playing colleagues, Arthur transitioned from being a lodger to becoming a glass merchant and owning his own glazing and diamond business. His only recorded match was playing for St Helens Rangers on the 6th of November 1881. He played in the forwards that day as the Saints ended the match with a victory over Simms Cross Reserves. The match would have been played at Littler’s Field in Dentons Green. It is possible that Arthur learned to play as a young man in the Birmingham area and wanted to continue this form of recreation on arrival in St. Helens. He married local St. Helens woman Emma Maude Crompton and they went on to have 4 children. The family lived in the salubrious St. Anne’s area of town off Dunriding Lane. Their address was West View in St. Anne’s Road which overlooked the Samuel Taylor Estate, later transformed into Taylor Park. Arthur died in St. Helens in April 1947 at the age of 84. |
