Biography of Matthew Brown |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Matthew Brown VERSATILE THREEQUARTER Matthew was a local lad who was born in St Helens September 1862. His father, George, was a labourer. In 1881 he was living with his parents at 11 Hardy Street, St. Helens. Their house was in the midst of the densely populated area of terraced housing close to the centre of the town. This was in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men. Matthew made his debut for St. Helens Rangers on the 23rd of October, 1880 in the victory over Birkenhead Rangers. He was singled out in the match report as playing ‘very well’. He was a versatile back three- quarters who could also fill in at half back. In all he is recorded as playing in 8 matches for St. Helens but because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period, the number of appearances is likely to be higher. His last recorded outing was in the home fixture against Liverpool Resistance on the 12th of November 1881. On that day it would seem that the Resistance was broken as the Saints ran out worthy winners. Mathew’s versatility was also evident in his working life as well. He is recorded a a being employed as a sheet glass labourer, a glass flattener and as a collier. He married Martha Roughly in the summer of 1884 and they had three children. Sadly Martha died in the early 1890s. Matthew did marry again on the 6th of January 1897. His bride was named Janette Cunliffe. In 1911 Matthew and Janette were living at 49 Kirkland Street, St. Helens. Matthew died in St. Helens in January 1925 at the age of 62. |
