Richard Ellison was born on the 17th December 1861 in St. Helens. His father, Joseph, was the landlord of the original Seven Stars Public House in Millbrook Lane, Eccleston, St. Helens. In 1881 Richard lived there and was described as a builder.

Richard made his debut for the Saints in the home victory over Bootle on the 26th of September, 1886. He was strong forward and went on to play an impressive 62 matches for the Club. His final match for the Saints first team was in the away League fixture against Tyldesley on the 23rd of November 1889. Unfortunately, the Saints suffered at defeat at the hands of the Bongers that day.

Richard married Ada Fairless in 1890 and the couple moved into a house at 126 Argyle Street. The couple went on to have four children although one child died soon after her birth. Richard was working as a joiner at this time but soon widened his work horizons by entering the world of building contracts.

Richard maintained a close link with the Club and became a member of the Saints’ Committee. He was also voted in as a local councillor on St. Helens Council. He became the Mayor of St. Helens in the same year that his company built the Pavilion for St. Helens RFC at Knowsley Road in 1920. Undoubtedly, Richard led a full life.

When he died on the 26th of April 1948 he was residing at Summerfields in Eccleston. He left £27 864 in his will, enough to buy 45 brand new terraced houses.
